Sounds so simple, be confident and you can get out of stuck and excel but the truth is that confidence is a CHALLENGE and most of us suffer from insecurity, uncertainty and often remain stuck because we lack the confidence to move forward.
What is confidence?
The dictionary says that confidence as a feeling: a feeling that you can do something or that you can succeed at something.
If confidence is a feeling, than you can affect it.
Feelings can be controlled by naming them, choosing whether you want them or not and then moderating, eliminating or accepting them.
But what do you do when confidence is lacking?
Susan jeffer wrote the book Feel the Fear . . . and Do It Anyway. It is a book about confidence and creating the picture of what you want and moving towards it rather than letting the feeling of fear keep you stuck. In my latest book, Who Stole My Success? my interviewees identify those thieves that would steal your success and prevent you from achieving your goals or objectives.
The key to building confidence though is found in using Naming Magic.
Remember Romeo and Juliet when Juliet says
“Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What’s Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.”
The name represents so much. Confidence is a name for a feeling. Your vision, goal, dream is a name. A name that gives you energy to achieve it. And despite what Juliet says, we are how we name ourselves: – Roberta, mother, wife, mentor, naming practioner, bulls**t eliminator or lover are some of my names for me.
Give your goal or vision or dream or objective a name you can control it.
Controlling is the magic. Magic is about giving people what they believe they will see.
Think of your favorite magicians and why you love them.
Houdini, Dynamo or David Copperfield control the environment. They control what they allow you to see. They control the outcome you will enjoy. They set your expectation by naming what you will see at the end of the trick and then create the magic so that you see it.
And you are rarely disappointed.
A different type of magician is Anthony Robbins. Often he takes you from where you are now to where you want to be in an instant by naming the emotion you want rather than the feeling that is holding you back. Using NLP techniques, he shifts you by magic and gives you control of a different feeling.
My favorite naming magic is the little circus engine. You remember the little circus train who said “I think I can, I think I can” as he merrily chugged up the hill pulling the animals and circus cars.
Can you “think you can”?
That is how you build confidence.
Think it, believe it, make it happen.
And to think it you need to name it.
Naming Magic is yours for the taking.
Naming Magic gives you confidence.
GO confidently out of stuck and excel.
To your future
