Enough with the Technology Stealing Success

Over the last few weeks technology has been the most frustrating and annoying part of life. But I think that we have overcome the challenges, well almost.Technology

For those of you who have tried to participate in the Stop the Success thieves conversations, you know that several times, the technology thwarted the discussion. Even yesterday, I pressed the wrong button and while the discussion happened with 2 awesome people, several others were unable to participate because I was in the wrong virtual space.

Over the last month, a number of clients and colleagues keep telling me that they can’t do something because they don’t know the technology or the they are afraid of doing something wrong with the technology and that will cost them. Using technology is a stress for them and they have enough stress in their lives.

Well get over it.

We live in a world with lots of technology and regardless of your age, sex or situation, if you are reading this blog technology is a part of your life.

10 Commonest Technology Excuses

  1. I don’t know how
  2. It might break
  3. It doesn’t work for me
  4. I’m too old to learn how to do that
  5. It’s too complicated for me to manage
  6. No one will help me, so I can’t
  7. But what happens if I break it?
  8. I forgot the password.
  9. What happens if I do it wrong?
  10. It’s just too hard to do

2 Simple Ways to Overcome Technology

  1. Be patient with yourself. Keep breathing. Give it time. Remember when you learned to walk, ride a bicycle, drive a car. It took time. You kept trying. You got support. And you kept the vision of what you wanted to do and found the solution. You can walk. You can ride or drive. And you can use a computer, DVD player, mobile phone, camera, microwave, washing machine, television and the rest of technology.
  2. Find someone who will train you. Be aware thought that the local teenager while they know how to connect to their games, they may not know too much more than that. But there are courses and videos and blogs and books. Find a dummy book and if there isn’t one for your technology problem, write it as you learn to do it. Make a video as you go. You learn so much when you teach others. A great tool for making videos is Screencast-omatic

I am blessed with a “give it a go attitude”. If I need to do something I give it a go and I work very hard to stop the failures from immobilizing me. Do you have a give it a go attitude?

And having been on computers and using microwaves, video players and other technology for over 40 years, I know where the off button is to reboot the machine if I screw it up too much.

Great pep talk, Roberta! Learning about technology is an ongoing process and you did a great job at showing your readers that the stumbling blocks shouldn’t be dead ends.

Roberta, thanks for the information. I just play with what I am trying to do. Then I hope I will remember what I did when I get something to work. I have two ways to keep track of the billions of usernames and passwords I have. I have a composition book and I use Evernote. It is syncked to my phone so if either has a major hick up, I have the other.

Love Evernote Ann although I just went to Evernote to find a reference for a guest blog I am writing and I had not coded the article right so will have to do a different search. One thing with cloud based storage is that it is independent of the device.Glad you enjoyed the post

I’m the techie… So, I don’t have those problems- instead, I can’t wait the 1.22 seconds for a page to load. It shouldn’t take that long :-)

You can wait Roy you just hate the load time wasting your time.. And yes technology would never slow you down, you love it, invest in it and support people who use it. I like and respect your techiness Roy

Such great advice! I remember when I did my first live webinar. I had a techie person on the line “standing by” because I just knew I would need back up! Of course, with every new technology, there are glitches and I’ve come to accept them. Do I still get nervous using something new? Of course, but like you say I have to get over it!

Thanks Martha. The one thing I am learning with technology is that a little knowledge is dangerous so take the time to read and breathe before pushing the button and trying to do something. Finding good techie people is so important. I am so grateful for my son, my business partner

I hear ya on this one Roberta! I also have that ‘give it a go’ attitude, but am finding some very talented folks within our community. The key is these folks are not only talented but they are ‘giving’ and sharing information that is very helpful in getting us out of stuck when it comes to technology.

Just today I had a gal help me with a rotating banner on my site. Who knew that I could do this. It only took a few minutes and with Skype, she watched me as I shared my screen and applied her step by step instructions.

Appreciate you sharing your wonderful insight on how to overcome what has become almost a daily thing, dealing with technology! Have a wonderful day.

Thanks Lynn. About to publish an article on more technology tips soon. I am constantly amazed at how people are so afraid of technology and only use a small part of it.
